This one seems semi-interesting, but in what I think the conceit of the Met Theater will get the better of them when they fail to sell-out all of their overpriced tickets. I think the theater industry is suffering enough in the Philippines, why make it even more inaccessible by charging outrageously? If Lea Salonga was in the play, sure I'd pay Php2500 for Orchestra seats. But when the biggest star you can advertise is Mylene Dizon, Php1000 is a lot to ask for the worst seats in the house.

THE REGULAR TOURS:

THE NORTH BANK
A Shopping Tour of Downtown Manila
Rizal Avenue and the Escolta was Manila's premier shopping district until the 1970's when the rise of Makati Commercial Center and the construction of the LRT somewhat diminished this distinction. Now part of Manila Mayor Atienza's Urban Renewal Program, the area has been cleaned up and rehabilitated as a pedestrian promenade. Most of its mid-20th century historic charm remains and its still the cheapest place in Manila to buy shoes, hardware, appliances, clothes, sex gadgets, jewelery, pearls, beauty queen tiaras, voodoo potions, flowers, handicrafts, videos, and electronics. This tour of Manila's more fascinating shops will also be coupled with a side tour of Quiapo Church, the Bahay Nakpil Bautista, the Handicraft Center under the Quezon Bridge, and the Quiapo Mosque. It’s a walking tour heavy on the walking part. Dress lightly and wear practical shoes.

Meet in front of the Calvo Building (Wah Yuen Restaurant) on Escolta at 2:30PM

Dates:
July 24 - Saturday
August 14 - Saturday
September 11 - Saturday

My brother is totally obsessing over this comedian-pretend Talk Show host called Ali G. He basically interviews serious people like some guy from the FBI, the secretary general, football players, homophobic Americans. Pretty funny stuff, he has three personas: the British hip hop journalist Ali G, the hilarious gay tv personality Bruno, and the clueless reporter from Kazakhstan Borat. They'll be showing this on HBO in the States soon, not sure if this will ever reach our shores though. May not be right for the Asian market. I'm thinking even the American market may not appreciate this either, might be too British.

What a week! So busy I haven't even been able to schedule time to watch The Amazing Race 5 and The O.C. -- both of which have been my simple joys of late.

* * *

In the movie trailer for The Alamo, I was surprised to hear that the filmmakers decided to use the EXACT SAME THEME as Gladiator. What's up with that? How can a feeling-big movie use the same friggin grandiose theme song as another recent blockbuster?

* * *

On the music front I've been digging Maroon 5 (whom one of my friends affectionately refers to as M5, or is that what everyone calls them?). I'm also into this semi-indie type band called matt pond PA. Check out their site, they have some downloadable music.

I love being alone at home by myself (a rarity in my huge household) and just being able to play my music at FULL BLAST. Too bad I can't enjoy my alone time and need to leave the house in a bit.

I like this song now by South, Paint the Silence. I heard it on The O.C. and I think they're playing it on K-Lite now. Okay I'll stop now before certain people disown me for being baduy (and even admitting to listening to K-Lite).

I'm planning a trip to Cagayan de Oro in August. By hook or by crook. Anyway all suggestions on hotels to stay at, places to see, restaurants to try, tour operators for White Water Rafting, Canopy Walking are most welcome.

There's an interesting article in today's edition of the Sunday New York Times' about how comic books may very well be the next big thing in literature. Apparently, even nonfiction (i.e. biographies) are being written in the form of comic books.

Not Funnies
By CHARLES McGRATH
Published: July 11, 2004

You can't pinpoint it exactly, but there was a moment when people more or less stopped reading poetry and turned instead to novels, which just a few generations earlier had been considered entertainment suitable only for idle ladies of uncertain morals.

Someday the novel, too, will go into decline -- if it hasn't already -- and will become, like poetry, a genre treasured and created by just a relative few. This won't happen in our lifetime, but it's not too soon to wonder what the next new thing, the new literary form, might be.

It might be comic books. Seriously. Comic books are what novels used to be -- an accessible, vernacular form with mass appeal -- and if the highbrows are right, they're a form perfectly suited to our dumbed-down culture and collective attention deficit. Comics are also enjoying a renaissance and a newfound respectability right now.

Hey check out what this restaurant in California is doing. Max Brenner should consider something along the same line for his chocolaterie if business doesn't pick up soon.

Bald People Eat Free at Calif. Eatery

LODI, Calif. (AP) - Bald is beautiful in Lodi - at least to Gary Arnold, a restaurant owner who charges customers according the amount of hair on their head.

A full head of hair will get you nowhere with Arnold, who sports a naked noggin himself.

But customers who come to Gary's Uptown Restaurant and Bar on Wednesdays with less than 50 percent of their hair get up to 50 percent off their food.

The real thing - a totally hairless head - will fetch a clean 100 percent off.

Yay they've just announced that in the new season of Amazing Race 5 there are two pit stops in the Philippines (meaning two episodes set here) : Coconut Palace on Roxas Boulevard and El Nido. How fun will that be? I'm dying to see what sorts of crazy things the show's producers made the contestants do in this country. Catch it this Wednesday at 8.00pm.
