I'm excited for Christmas! Irrational as that may be, I do somehow feel that Christmas is fast approaching. All the food!

Coup d'etat Blues: Some roads are still blocked. I tried to go to Makati this morning, to put in an hour or so of work before going to our Ortigas office, but alas! The EDSA-Ortigas intersection was blocked. I just headed home to read some NY Times articles, and blog.

***

I went to Price Smart for the first time in two years with my mum last Saturday. Lotsa good stuff, we bought a garden badminton set (only PHP800+). My younger brother asked my mum why there were so many foreigners shopping there. Ho-hum. They have good baked goods, frozen foods, and wine selections. They don't have the same amazing book selection that Price Club does though. Nice to go to Price Smart every once in a while, but you'll hardly find everything on your grocery list.

Oh no I missed this week's episode of the Amazing Race, but I found out who got eliminated because I read it in the paper. Augh! People should know what SPOILER WARNINGS are. Speaking of the paper, do idiots like Maurice Arcache really think people take him seriously? And what's with all the loser lifestyle columnists that like to talk about their expensive lives? On a shoestring columnist's salary? I don't think so.

I read an interesting article in some supermarket tabloid (Enquirer, Star or something like that) when I was in the dermatologist last weekend ... I wouldn't actually BUY these magazines mind you. It compared the salary of Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City, around $50K a year or $37K after taxes, against her lifestyle of shoes, clothes and eating out -- around $250K. Yikes. The 4th Season of SATC is out on DVD by the way. Anyone up for a marathon?

Uva's (Greenbelt 2, Makati) Chocnut Ice Cream is as good as people said it would be, and better! Pricey at PHP190 for three big scoops though. And the pounds don't come off easy.

Magnum in Greenbelt 2 has this great great Happy Hour promotion: Drink All You Can Wine for PHP299++. The deal comes with a "free appetizer," but it's just a little bit of bread with some spam/pate type thing. Still, a good deal for would-be wine lovers out there.

Temple (again in Greenbelt 2) is pretty cheap, it turns out. For my hungry family of 9, our bill was only a little over PHP2000. The interiors are a glaring rip-off of Tao, this trendy restaurant in New York someone took us out to once, with a three story tall Buddha statue. Temple was surprisingly empty for Sunday lunch (as in we were the only ones there). Food is generally good, with that deep-fat fried oily MSG thing going for all its food. I might go there again, to eat NOT to hang out mind you.

My brother has been obsessing about this semi-new dessert stand in the Greenbelt 3 food court, Ice Monster. It's basically crushed ice with condensed milk and any fruit/ice cream/halo-halo type filling on top. Yummy, large, a little on the pricey side at PHP70 for a big glass good for two people. Nice for a hot sunny day (which is practically everyday in this fine tropical country of ours), not too sweet, and the ice is really really finely crsuhed ... none of that big chunky unevenly crushed type that most regular halo-halo is served with.

Currently showing in Metro Manila Theaters, with comments and % ratings stolen from Rotten Tomatoes:
  • The Lizzie McGuire Movie (37%). They say: Harmless piece of fluff that ought to satisfy fans of the TV show. I say: Might actually watch it with my tween sister.
  • T3: Rise of the Machines (74%). They say: Although T3 never reaches the heights of the second movie, it is a welcome addition to the Terminator franchise. I say: Less Edward Furlong but plus Claire Danes? Not a fair deal.
  • Charlie’s Angels 2: Full Throttle (41%). They say: Eye candy for those who don't require a movie to have a plot or for it to make sense. I say: This is so two weeks ago, and since I haven’t seen it by now I might as well wait for it on cable.
  • Down With Love (59%). They say: Looks great, but Zellweger and McGregor have no chemistry together, and the self-satisfied, knowing tone grates. I say: I’ll watch it because it looks cute … and has Ewan!
  • Jackass the Movie (48%). They say: There's a good chance you'll be laughing hysterically at one stunt, but getting grossed out by the next one in this big screen version of the controversial MTV show. I say: Great fun with a big group of friends, not sure how fun it can be laughing with strangers in a theater though.
  • Impostor (17%). They say: With its low production value and uninspired direction, Impostor comes off as a mixture of The Fugitive and Blade Runner, only not as good or as involving. I say: Never heard, probably not worth it.

For dinner yesterday we made:
  • boring macaroni with Bolognese sauce (chicken in lieu of ground beef)
  • steamed crabs
  • Best Roast Beef with red wine au jus
  • Paella Valenciana
  • a salad I threw together with lemon-olive oil dressing, tomatoes, red peppers, feta cheese
  • mango torte (fine I didn’t make this, we bought it … I would love to try to make one next time though)

Random ingredient finds:
  • I found mustard in a (toothpaste like) tube at Shopwise! Actually I wasn’t really sure if it was mustard because the label was in German. It was yellow though, and only PHP70. It turns out it was mustard. Yay!
  • My mum and I went to Seaside Seafood Market along Roxas to buy some fresh fish for our reunion last night. We bought huge crabs, shelled scallops, clams, sashimi grade tuna. There were a lot of other kinds of fish I would have wanted to get, but it would have been a waste if I didn’t cook it the same day it was bought. We were thinking we’d go every Saturday morning—mussels, jumbo shrimps and prawns, all parts of tuna, huge unidentifiable fish that I could probably find some creative use for, oysters …
  • Santi’s fresh-ish Feta cheese is no good. It costs more than PHP100 and it’s this icky mushy mess. Blech, I like the pre-packaged Feta they sell in Shopwise for the same price better.
  • Avocados are in season! They’re the fattiest fruit around, but they’re pretty good in salads, for guacamole, as a random ingredient to throw into dishes for an extra creamy taste.
  • I was looking for lemongrass in the grocery and ended up buying these bundled up leaves labeled "tanglad." I kind of looked like lemongrass, but I couldn't be sure. I bought it anyway. Good thing it turned out to be lemongrass. I have to get used to the Filipino translation of ingredients. A lot of stuff in the grocery is labeled without the English translation (i.e. kasubha for saffron).

CAFE-RAVE
Salumeria

G/F Greenbelt Mansion, 106 Perea St, Makati City

Just a stone’s throw away from World Topps is this cozy little café that’s a little on the pricey side … explaining why it was practically empty during lunch. I feel bad for nice-ish restaurants like this that don’t get that many clients. We just had coffee and a yummy dessert—Bread Pudding with an Espresso Shot (PHP100). Pretty interesting, not that many places in this country serve bread pudding. I liked how the espresso shot was meant to be poured over the bread pudding, an interesting alternative to traditional creamy heavy sauces. Nice non-Kenny G jazzy type music, pleasant ambiance. Not sure if I’d have lunch here though, with prices in the PHP300-upwards range. It looks like they have some sort of nightly scene going, with a little band set-up and a stack of Audrey Hepburn movies by a TV and VHS player.

Mango stores are wild! They went on sale yesterday (up to 50% off they say, although historically they can slash a lot more as time passes). I’ve been waiting waiting waiting for the Mango sale since I started work, and overall I can say I’m not disappointed. I went to the Shangri-la branch at around 11.00am and it was packed, with long lines to the dressing room (up to 10 pieces at a time) and even longer lines at the sole cash register. I’ll probably go back a few more times at different branches, as they tend to continually bring out new stuff. Besides, most people shop for casual/evening/Saturday-night-out wear and not really suits and stuff. And most Filipinos are too short to fit into their really long pants (ha!).

RESTO-RANT
Bon Appetit

3/F Shangri-la Mall, Mandaluyong City

Last Sunday my family and I ate in Bon Appetit, for lack of any good choices to begin with in Shangri-la. Their PHP265 lunch seemed like a good deal at first, but we got what we paid for. Iceberg lettuce, lousy salad toppings, weird meat dishes, rubbery roast beef. I did enjoy the ice cream bar, although it was a little on the hard-to-scoop side, I appreciated the make-your-own crepe and make-your-own sundae set-ups. Generally boring and not really worth a second go, but might be a good deal if you’re feeling cheap but hungry.

Branches at:
- 333 Katipunan Avenue, Loyola Heights, Quezon City
- Shangri-la Plaza Mall, 3rd Floor, EDSA cor. Shaw Blvd., Mandaluyong
- Glorietta, Glorietta 3 Level 2, Ayala Center, Makati City
- Alabang Town Center, Ground Floor, Corte de las Palmas
- Power Plant Mall, Concourse Level, Rockwell Drive cor. Estrella St.
